Welder wins £1 million on the Lottery two weeks after being made redundant

Alan Tyrie lost his job as a welder on January 11 - and by January 23 he and his wife were celebrating their incredible win

Winners: Marjorie and Alan Tyrie have scooped £1m

A welder who had just been made redundant had the last laugh when he discovered he'd won £1 million in the Lottery.

Alan and Marjorie Tyrie, both 58, had to keep quiet at first when they realised they'd struck lucky on the National Lotto raffle while they verified the claim.

But as the news sank in, any worries about not having enough money went out of the window.

The couple, from Folkestone, Kent, said their bad luck turned to good news in less than two weeks.

Alan got made redundant from his job as a welder on January 11 - and by January 23 they were celebrating their incredible win.

Celebration: Alan only lost his job a few weeks ago

Marjorie said: "I saw this email saying there was news on my ticket and I thought it was a wind up at first. I'd only got one matching number."

"When I got to speak to someone from the lottery they made sure I was sitting down and then they told me.

"I was shaking like a jellyfish.

"It is just absolutely surreal - it hasn't sunk in even though it's real now - we've got the cheque."

Shock: The couple couldn't believe it when they won the cash

Although Alan losing his job came as a blow to the couple, it didn't take him long to find another one - but in the end he didn't even have to accept it.

He said winning the lottery was a complete shock - and he even thought his wife was having him on at first.

Marjorie, who works as a club steward at Oddfellows Social Club said it won't be too long before Alan does decide to take up another job though - as both of them enjoy working hard.

She said: "We are work people it only took him a week to find another job.

"But he does construction welding which really is quite manual labour so he's decided to take a break and concentrate on improving his golf for a bit."

The couple, who have two children in their 30s, are now taking the time to decide exactly what to do with the money.

Marjorie said: "We are just going to take a couple of months to think about what to do.

"Camelot have been giving us plenty of advice and we've had meetings with them about how to manage the money."

First and foremost however, the couple plan to treat their sons and Marjorie has decided it's time for a new car.

She said: "I've got a tiny Peugeot 207 - so I think I'll upgrade to a four door so I have room to give people lifts."

The social club worker said she's always played the lottery and always used the same numbers - family birthdays.

But actually winning is something she'd only ever dreamed of.

She said: "It's something you just dream about - it's always 'what if?' and you never actually think about what actually happens when you win.

"Now it's happened we are absolutely dumbstruck."
